چکیده

We present a 16-month sequence of monthly polarimetric 43 GHz VLBA images of the radio galaxy 3C 120. The images probe the inner regions of the radio jet of this relatively nearby superluminal radio galaxy at a linear resolution of 0.07 h 65 pc (Ho = 65 h65 km s −1 Mpc). We follow the motion of a number of features with apparent velocities between 4.01±0.08 and 5.82±0.13 h 65 c. A new superluminal knot, moving at 4.29 ± 0.16 h 65 c, is observed to be ejected from the core at a time coincident with the largest flare ever observed for this source at millimeter wavelengths. Changes in the position angle of this component, as well as a progressive rotation of its magnetic polarization vector, suggest the presence of a twisted (resembling a helix in projection) configuration of the underlying jet magnetic field and jet geometry. We identify several knots that appear in the wake of the new superluminal component, moving at proper motions ∼ 4 times slower than any of the other moving knots observed in 3C 120. These features have properties similar to those of the “trailing” shocks seen in relativistic, time-dependent, hydrodynamical and emission simulations of compact jets. Such trailing compressions are triggered by pinch-mode jet-body instabilities caused by the propagation of a strong perturbation, which we associate with the new strong superluminal component. Subject headings: galaxies: active – galaxies: individual (3C 120) – galaxies: jets – polarization – radio continuum: galaxies

VLBA polarimetric observations of 3C 286 at 5 GHz

Polarimetric observations at 5 GHz using the VLBA are reported of the compact steep spectrum source 3C 286. There are two flat spectrum knots but both are too highly polarized to be a typical core component and both appear to be resolved in VLBA measurements. The morphology and polarization structure of this source is also quite distinct from typical core–jet sources. It is suggested that the c...

Changes in the measured image separation of the gravitational lens system , PKS 1830 - 211

Changes in the measured image separation of the gravitational lens system, PKS 1830-211. ABSTRACT We present eight epochs of 43 GHz, dual-polarisation VLBA observations of the gravitational lens system PKS 1830-211, made over fourteen weeks. A bright, compact " core " and a faint extended " jet " are clearly seen in maps of both lensed images at all eight epochs. The relative separation of the ...

Multifrequency VLBA Monitoring of 3 C 273 during the INTEGRAL Campaign in 2003 I . Kinematics of the Parsec Scale Jet from 43 GHz Data

In this first of a series of papers describing polarimetric multifrequency Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) monitoring of 3C 273 during a simultaneous campaign with the INTEGRAL γ-ray satellite in 2003, we present 5 Stokes I images and source models at 7 mm. We show that a part of the inner jet (1–2 milliarcseconds from the core) is resolved in a direction transverse to the flow, and we analyse ...

Quasi - Periodic Changes in the Parsec - Scale Jet of 3 C 345

We have observed the QSO 3C 345 with VSOP at 1.6 GHz and 5 GHz and with the VLBA at 22 GHz and 43 GHz, with 24 epochs in total, from 1997.40 to 1999.69. This study, combined with previous observations, reveals periodic changes in the parsec-scale jet. This quasi-periodicity can be found in the initial position angles, the trajectories and the flux density evolution of the jet components, with a...

Parsec-scale Blazar Monitoring: Proper Motions

We present proper motions obtained from a dual frequency, six-epoch, VLBA polarization experiment monitoring a sample of 12 blazars. The observations were made at 15 GHz and 22 GHz at bi-monthly intervals over 1996. Ten of the eleven sources for which proper motion could be reliably determined are superluminal. Only J2005+77 has no superluminal components. Three sources (OJ 287, J1224+21, and J...
